Mrs Henry Lafayette Dubose is a brave old lady who is never afraid to express her opinions on social circumstances and affairs. As the product of an upbringing filled with prejudice towards non-whites, she doesn't hesitate to taunt others, particularly Scout, who does not fit with the stereotype of a young girl and whose father treats blacks fairly and as citizens. In Scout's eyes, Mrs Dubose
is a grotesque human who goes crazy when Jem ruins her camelias, and in return requests them to read to her. What she does not see though is her battle between a morphine addiction and her desire to leave this world, narcotic free. This was a great influence on Scout and emphasises Atticus' important moral, seeing as Mrs Dubose is very vulnerable beneath her hard, fearless outer shell.
